Do you need reliable SMT PCB connections with a pitch of 1.27 mm, and do you need them fast? The straight One27® SMT PCB connectors from ept are now available with a shipping time of just two to four weeks. With a pitch of only 1.27 mm, they can be used to connect mezzanine PCBs. Are you already purchasing your 1.27 mm-pitch SMT connectors from another manufacturer, but are you needing to complement them with straight male or female connectors? The One27® connectors are proven to be compatible with all currently available SMT connectors with a pitch of 1.27 mm from other manufacturers.
Parallel PCB connections with distances ranging from 8 mm to 13.8 mm can be implemented with the One27® connectors thanks to their absolutely secure mating. To this end, the straight connectors (male and female) are available as either mid-profile or low-profile types. All connectors from the One27® range are available with pin counts of 12, 16, 20, 26, 32, 40, 50, 68, and 80.
Thanks to a coplanarity tolerance of just 0.1 mm, the One27 connectors can be soldered to the PCB easily and securely. Board locks, i.e., lateral metal brackets, that are also soldered onto the PCB ensure that the connectors can withstand heavy load capacity between the connector and the PCB. The PCB connectors are shipped in tape-and-reel packaging to facilitate automatic SMT assembly.
It is easy and reliable to connect the One27® SMT connectors thanks to their large capture range: The permissible center offset is 0.7 mm along both the longitudinal and the transversal axis. The tolerance for angular inclination is 4° longitudinally and 2° transversally, which means the connection between the male and female connectors is particularly reliable. This is ensured by the double-sided female contacts on the female connector, which envelops the contact pins of the male connector from two sides, ensuring a safe connection in any application. Moreover, the connector is plugged on the smooth, rolled surface of the female contact. Excessive wear and tear of the contact surfaces and shavings become a thing of the past when using the One27® connectors for plugging applications.
Colibri high-speed connectors will soon offer even more
Ept’s Colibri PCB connectors, which have a pitch of 0.5 mm, are already a reliable choice in COM express and high-speed applications up to 10 Gbps. Now, ept is looking to add a new, high-speed variant to the connector series. The new connector will be suitable for data transfer rates of up to 16 Gbps and beyond.
In order to guarantee outstanding signal quality at these high data transfer rates, ept is optimizing the contact design for the entire Colibri connector series. Like its 10 Gbps sibling, the new high-speed variant will be available for board-to-board distances of 5 or 8 mm. Both the plug and the receptacle will also be available with pin counts of 40, 80, 120, 160, 200 and 220. There will also be a 440-pin version, which will consist of two 220-pin plugs or receptacles held together by a soldering frame.
S-parameters for simulating data transfer rates of up to 16 Gbps will be available for the embeddedworld trade fair in Nuremburg.
ept Colibri SMT connectors are now optionally available with a thicker gold coating
ept’s Colibri PCB connectors, which have a pitch of 0.5 mm, are a reliable choice in COM express and high-speed applications up to 10 Gbps. In response to customer demand, these high-speed connectors are now also available as a Heavy Au version for deployment in challenging environments. A contact coating of 0.76 µm gold ensures reliable contacting and excellent signal integrity even under challenging conditions such as shocks, vibration, and other environmental stresses. Thanks to the thicker gold layer, the operating temperature range is extended to -40°C to +125°C.
The contact design, which is optimized for high data transfer rates, means that the Heavy Au version of the Colibri connector achieves data rates up to 10 Gbps and beyond, all the while maintaining great signal integrity. This has been proven by signal integrity tests carried out by the Fraunhofer Institute. The testers compared the Colibri® connectors to compatible SMT connectors from other manufacturers and also tested the two connector types in combination, achieving excellent results in each scenario. The Colibri Heavy Au 0.5 mm-pitch SMT connectors are available for board-to-board distances of 5 mm and 8 mm. Both the plugs and receptacles of the Colibri range are available for pin counts of 40, 80, 120, 160, 200, and 220. There also is a 440-pin version, which is made up of two 220-pin plugs or receptacles held together by a soldering frame. This facilitates more accurate positioning of the connectors on the PCB - which, just like the tape-and-reel packaging, is perfect for fully automated assembly
Electronic developers are frequently tasked with adapting parallel PCB connections to a wide range of spatial requirements. With ept’s One27® SMT PCB connector, which has a pitch of 1.27 mm, the distance between any two stacked PCBs is variable by up to 5.8 mm. This flexibility is provided by two factors: On the one hand, both the male and female connectors are available in low-profile and mid-profile sizes. On the other hand, the profiles can be freely combined, which means the board-to-board distance can be as low as 8 mm and as high as 13.8 mm.
This wide range is made possible by the wide secure-mating distance of the One27® connectors. The connection between any male and female connector remains secure up to a distance of 1.5 mm. Secure mating between the male connector’s contact pin and the dual beam contact of the female connector is ensured by the remaining 0.9 mm of contact distance. The maximum achievable board-to-board distance when using a mid-profile male connector with a mid-profile female connector is therefore 13.8 mm. On the other hand, when a low-profile male connector is plugged all the way into a low-profile female connector, the board-to-board distance is only 8 mm.
Thanks to right-angle male and female connectors, the One27® SMT connection system can also be used to create right-angle and horizontal PCB layouts. In addition, IDC male connectors make it possible to connect ribbon cables to the PCB. All connectors from the One27® range are available with pin counts of 12, 16, 20, 26, 32, 40, 50, 68, and 80. The connectors have been demonstrated to be fully compatible with common 1.27 mm-pitch SMT connectors from other manufacturers.
Effective immediately, all versions of the Colibri® high-speed connectors with a pitch of 0.5 mm are now also available with the pin counts 40, 80, 120, 160, and 200.
The original pin count versions, 220 and 440, have already proven their merit in terms of performance and contact design in COM Express applications. Having five more pin count options to choose from now provides hardware developers with more opportunities to optimally adapt the heights and pin counts of the necessary board-to-board connections in keeping with the relevant high-speed application. The entire Colibri® connector series, including the new pin count options, impresses with extremely robust design and a high degree of versatility. The 3.0 release of the successful COM Express computer-on-module standard includes a new pinout type. This enables a faster data transfer rate of up to 10 Gbps, thereby expanding the applicability of COM Express in terms of server applications. Of course, the PCB connectors required to connect the baseboard and the COM module need to meet these increased requirements.
Unlike the type 6 pinout, the new type 7 pinout does not include any audio or video interfaces. As such, it does not represent a substitute for type 6; instead, it expands the range of COM Express applications in terms of server applications. The audio and video interfaces on the previous pinout type have been replaced with four 10 GB Ethernet KR lanes and 32 PCI Express lanes to increase the data transfer rate. These new features are relevant for use in video on demand in the telecom segment, for example, as well as medical or security technology applications.
These areas of application require reliable PCB connectors, which are essential for securely connecting the baseboard with the COM module and guaranteeing high data transfer rates of up to 10 Gbps. Is it possible to connect PCBs safely and reliably to one another, keeping space requirements to a minimum? It is, with the One27® SMT PCB connectors from ept. But there’s more: With a pitch of only 1.27 mm, they can be used to connect PCBs mezzanine, horizontally board-to-board or perpendicularly. You can use the female One27® IDC connectors for sturdy board-to-cable applications. With all of these options, the One27® connectors are proven to be compatible with all currently available SMT connectors with a pitch of 1.27 mm from other manufacturers.

After soldering, the quality of the solder can be checked using AOI from only one side when using angled One27® connectors, thanks to the offset arrangement of the optimized contact design. The Colibri® connector system stands out due to its rugged design and flexible usability. Both 220-pin and 440-pin versions for board-to-board distances of 5 and 8 mm are available. Colibri® is a double-row connector system consisting of a plug and a receptacle, each of which has a pitch dimension of 0.5 millimeters. They are processed using SMT technology, in other words, soldered directly on the circuit board. Colibri® single connectors feature 220 pins. The 440-pins version consists of two 220-pins Colibri® connectors which are held together through an assembling frame. The frame guarantees an exact positioning of the two connectors according to COM Express specifications and has to be removed after soldering.
ept gives its customers additional flexibility by offering Colibri® products that are compatible with all common connectors available on the market. The compatibility is proved by signal integrity tests performed by the Fraunhofer Institute, where Colibri® connectors reached excellent results - in comparison as well as in connection with other COM Express connectors.

After adding a 440-pins version to the COM Express connector system Colibri®, ept now releases the Colibri Plug for 5 mm board-to-board distance. As well as the 8 mm version this one, too, is available with 220 or 440 pins.
ept is introducing a new board-to-board connector range based on the press-fit system: flexilinkb-t-b connectors provide high-quality, non-pluggable connections between PCBs at a pitch of 2.54 mm, making use of the successful 'Tcom press' press-fit system. The advantages of this are evident - a reliable mechanical as well as electrical board-to-board connection is created using just a single part. There is no need for any spacers, which not only saves on PCB real estate but also reduces costs. Developers are free to pick board-to-board distances ranging from 5 to 25 mm. The connector provides 1 to 3 rows with a versatile 2 to 90 contacts each.
